As far as functionality is concerned, a gas fire pit works very much like the typical indoor fireplaces, especially if it is fuelled using gas pipelines. A regular fireplace hosts the fire over the base or flooring, and a fire pit builds the fire over ceramic, metal or stone, depending on what forms its base. Specific gas fire pit models may be structured in a typical standardized fashion, for instance, the chimenea, which comes as a rounded container with a cylindrical opening to feed the fire. While traditional gas fire pits, including the chimeneas are constructed out of ceramic, several models come in cast iron and other metals, as well as stone.
